Laundry delivery vs. the laundromat: an honest comparison

Fold Laundry · Updated September 27, 2026 · 6 min read

We run a laundry delivery service, so read this with that in mind — but we also started as people who did their own laundry in apartments with no hookups, and the laundromat is not the villain. Here is where each one wins.

Cost

The laundromat wins on cash. Two loads washed and dried in Los Angeles or San Francisco is $12–20 in machines, plus detergent. Delivery for a week's worth (15–18 lb) is about $39.99 with Fold ($2.65/lb, free pickup and delivery). That gap is real: roughly $20–25 a week, or about $100 a month.

Time

Delivery wins, and it isn't close. A laundromat visit is 90 minutes minimum if the machines are free, closer to three hours on a Sunday in Silver Lake or the Mission. You also do the folding. With pickup, the whole interaction is thirty seconds to schedule and ten seconds to put a bag outside. Over a month that is 8–12 hours back. At any hourly value above $10, the math flips.

What comes back

This is the part people underrate. Laundromat machines are hot, fast, and often run with whatever detergent the last person left behind; they are hard on elastics and colors. A facility running commercial equipment on a schedule can sort by color and fabric, use hypoallergenic detergent by default, and fold to a standard — a shirt folded by someone who folds 400 a day looks different from one folded on a laundromat table. Fold also photographs and itemizes every bag, so "I'm missing a sock" has an answer.

Where the laundromat still makes sense

  • You have a very small load and a laundromat on your block.
  • You enjoy the ritual (some people do — there's a reason Sunday laundromats have coffee).
  • You're washing something you'd never hand to anyone: a wetsuit, a dog bed, that one sweater.
  • Budget is the only variable and $100 a month is real money.

Where delivery makes sense

  • Your building's laundry room is oversubscribed or broken (this is most of Downtown LA and SoMa).
  • You have a family and laundry is a multi-hour weekly event.
  • You're in a hotel or a short-term rental with no machine at all.
  • You'd pay $25 to not spend Sunday in a laundromat. Most of our customers would, and did.

A middle path

Plenty of people do both: laundromat for the occasional odd item, delivery for the weekly load. Fold Club exists for the second half — a flat $44.99 per bag on the Wash & Fold and All-In plans, a locked weekly window, free same-day. If you're curious what your own week would cost, the homepage estimator will tell you before you schedule anything.
